More Than a Game: Why Sport is at the Heart of BY Group

Building community, culture and opportunities

A Community-Led Company With Sport in its DNA

For BY Group, community isn’t just a value, it’s the foundation of everything we do. As an Indigenous-owned construction company, we believe in building more than just physical infrastructure. We’re building opportunities, confidence, cultural pride and connection.
One of the most powerful ways we achieve this is through sport.

From sponsoring local teams to competing in tournaments, sport plays a vital role in our company culture and community engagement. It's how we connect with each other, celebrate Indigenous talent and create opportunities for the next generation.

From the Field to the Frontlines - Brendan 'Dingo' Williams

Before he co-founded BY Group, Brendan Williams was a professional rugby union player, best known for his speed, agility and dedication on the field. A proud Bundjalung man, Brendan's rugby journey took him from the Randwick Rugby Club to representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games, and then onto a professional career in Italy.

He’s played fullback for teams like the NSW Waratahs, Benetton Treviso and Petrarca Padova. He’s also featured in Rugby 06 and Rugby 08 video games as “B. Wallace” — a nod to his time on the global stage.

Now, he brings that same passion, leadership and team spirit to BY Group, where sport continues to be a vital part of how we work and how we give back.

Meet the BY Group Dingoes!

Our pride and joy, the BY Group Dingoes, is more than a company rugby team. It’s a symbol of what sport means to us. We’ve fielded both male and female teams in multiple Ella 7s tournaments, the flagship Indigenous Sevens Rugby event named in honour of the legendary Ella brothers.

Led by Brendan, the Dingoes represent BY Group’s values in action. Whether it’s running out on the field or setting up the gazebos behind the scenes, the whole BY Group community gets involved: staff, family, friends and supporters alike.

Creating Opportunities through Sport

Our support for sport extends far beyond game day. We’re long-time supporters of the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (Lloydies), which works to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in rugby and provide educational opportunities to young Indigenous Australians. Attending the annual dinners are a highlight for our team.

We've also sponsored community-led initiatives like Waterloo Storm that promotes healthy lifestyles and social inclusion for Indigenous families. From kids’ footy teams to women’s netball squads, sport gives young people a way to connect, learn and grow.

Building Health, Confidence and Connection

We’ve seen firsthand how sport strengthens more than just bodies. It builds character, leadership and lifelong bonds.

We’ve participated in Corporate Touch Football tournaments to raise funds for causes like Ellavation, competed in Aqua Rugby, and supported community health initiatives like Heartbeat of Football, promoting heart health awareness at events such as the First Nations Football Festival.

In 2024, a few of our team had the privilege to play alongside rugby greatsGlen Ella and Cliff Lyons at a Charity Golf Day, where we joined along in raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Solomon Island 7s Sponsorship

BY Group, along with our partner company Hatanga, has also co-sponsored the Solomon Islands National Rugby 7s team that competed in the Oceania competition in 2024.

For NAIDOC Week 2024, we were honoured to sponsors the design and production of  the amazing First Nations artwork design of the jerseys for the Inner West Bulls basketball team in the NBL1 league.

Sport is also part of our day-to-day culture. Many of our staff are active players, fans or volunteers in their local sporting communities, and we know that when we invest in people’s passions, we support their wellbeing, self-esteem and sense of belonging.

For BYG Safety and Compliance Manager Mick Allison, Rugby League has been a big part of life since he was 6 years old. He's also part of the Australian Defence Force Rugby League as a coach and trainer internationally. Read more about Mick's story here.
