BY Our People - Kayla Muir

A chat with Administration Assistant Kayla Muir

Each employee  at BY Group contributes uniquely to our mission of fostering meaningful community connections and delivering impactful projects.

In this edition of BY Our People, we’re thrilled to introduce Kayla Muir, an Administration Assistant based in our South Coast office in NSW. Kayla’s journey into the construction industry is one of exploration and growth, and her role at BY Group allows her to make a difference both professionally and personally. We caught up with Kayla to learn more about her story and her experience working with BY Group.

Kayla, can you tell us a little bit about your background and what led you to a career in the construction industry?

I am a proud descendant of the Gamilaraay people, deeply rooted in the land and community of Gunnedah, NSW. My decision to pursue a career in the construction industry was a complete change for me. After reflecting on my personal and professional goals, I realised I wanted to take on new challenges and explore opportunities that would allow me to grow in a different direction.

What do you enjoy most about working at BY Group and what do you hope to achieve in the next 5 years?

I really enjoy my role on our RAP Working Group, I’ve been fortunate enough to plan the South Coast Reconciliation Week event which brought everyone closer together as a team, acknowledging and celebrating First Nations history.

In the next five years, I hope to continue expanding my education and skill set to better my future and make even greater contributions to BY Group. I’m committed to growing both professionally and personally, so I can bring more value to the company and help drive meaningful, community-focused development. My goal is to build on the knowledge I’ve gained so far, learn from others in the industry, and ultimately play a larger role in shaping projects that benefit our communities and leave a lasting impact.

What’s it like working at BY Group’s South Coast office? Anything about that location that stands out to you?

I really enjoy working at BY groups South Coast Office, it’s a very close-knit working environment down here which creates a great sense of community. As for the location, being close to the beach is great!

How does BY Group's focus on community and culture connect with you personally?

BY Group’s focus on community and culture deeply resonates with me because it aligns with values, I hold close- those of stewardship, respect, and collective growth. As an Indigenous woman working for BY Group, I take great pride in knowing that the work we do today can create lasting, positive impacts for future generations. I’m proud to see BY Group bridging the gap between industry and culture, creating space for Indigenous voices to shape development. This inclusive approach strengthens my connection to the work, reinforcing my belief in creating meaningful, sustainable change for both our communities and the future.

What advice would you give to other Indigenous women considering a career in construction?

Don’t be afraid to take that first step and give it a go.

The world of construction might seem daunting at first, but it’s also full of incredible opportunities for growth, learning, and making a real impact. When I first started, I had no previous experience or knowledge in this industry and now I have attained my Certificate 4 in Project Management, and I continue to learn so much each day.

Construction is a powerful, hands-on industry where you can make a real difference, both for yourself and your community. So, take that first step. Ask questions, take on new opportunities, and know that every bit of effort you put in today is building a foundation for your future and future generations of indigenous women in this industry.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

I love taking my dogs to the beach for a walk and a swim, I also enjoy hanging out with friends.

And finally, what are some of your favourite cuisines? Do you have a go-to place you like to eat at on the South Coast? 🍛
My go to place on the south coast is BELEAF, which is a Japanese restaurant.
