Identity and connection drive the work we do at BY Group and instil the values we want to see in the future within the construction industry. In this article we share Tane Mundine’s story, a recent HSC graduate who completed his School Based Traineeship at BY Group.
Tane highlights what the role of Administration Assistant at BY Group has taught him and what he hopes to achieve in the future with these essential skills.
I am a proud Bundjalung man and my ancestors are from Baryulgil. My connection to Country has strengthened recently, especially after my visit back home in August. Being on my ancestral land helped deepen my understanding of my identity, culture and the importance of staying connected.
My journey to BY Group began with my interest in contributing to an administration-focused work environment. When I first arrived, I was immediately drawn to BY Group’s commitment to sustainable construction solutions, community engagement and excellence in project delivery.
During my time here, my role as an Administration Assistant gradually expanded, allowing me to gain a deeper insight into the construction industry. As I learned more, I saw firsthand the dedication and growth within BY Group. It inspired me to want to be a part of that growth and show the same level of commitment in my work.
In my first six months at BY Group I mainly completed administration tasks such as processing monthly expenses, answering calls from subcontractors and tender contacts, office management and maintaining databases and filing systems.
After July 2024, my responsibilities grew significantly. I began assisting with invoicing through Procore, engaging more closely with construction projects, coordinating with subcontractors and tenders, collecting mail, attending site visits and joining project meetings. These experiences gave me a much clearer understanding of how the construction industry operates day-to-day.
Throughout my traineeship, I managed to balance my work responsibilities with my HSC study load, with BY Group being very flexible with my work days and hours. I achieved strong academic results, including:
I also placed 3rd in my TAFE class while completing my Certificate III in Business. I am currently awaiting the final outcomes from my HSC exams and am excited to see the results.
I’m very grateful to be continuing with BY Group after the Christmas break. This will be the true beginning of my career, and I plan to continue building my skills through further education—either through TAFE or possibly university in the future. My goal is to strengthen my knowledge and contribute even more to BY Group as I grow professionally.
When I wasn’t working or studying for my HSC, I enjoyed spending time with friends, playing basketball and watching both basketball and rugby league.
I also love creating Aboriginal artwork. One of my HSC major works was an interconnected piece representing two Indigenous cultures, which was something I was really proud to produce.
